Russell Frantom is a Midwest-based artist whose works have been exhibited out of New York City, Chicago and South Bend, IN, among other places. Frantom’s diverse and comprehensive body of art comprises thousands of expressionistic paintings, and he expands his media to photographs, videos and other multimedia as well.
The paintings often display surreal tendencies including high-key colors, deep textural paint-strokes and focus on expressionism. Most of all he explores the human condition and human psyche through a variety of different subject matter and intense creative choices. Often unifying paradoxical themes such as good and evil, pure and impure, paralysis and motion, —Frantom explores the ways we experience the world around us and are catalyzed by our sensations through his masterful wielding of the paintbrush.
Birds, owls, cats, fish, the artist himself—all and more are explored in ways revealing great nuance. Paint is layered on at times intensely, at times softly, overall full of wonderful technique. Viewers are left to unpack full flares of colors exuding the complexity of the human psyche, our place in nature, and our spiritual place in the universe, among other motifs.
Frantom has had solo art shows at a variety of galleries in the USA including Mosaic Gallery in his home town of South Bend IN and he‘s known for having pop up events in a variety of locations. He has sold work His works continue to be exhibited in galleries internationally and he has a slate of works on view and for sale. It is in Human Nature to look upon the “Weird” or the “Macabre” and run away from it. Russell’s artwork spotlights those things we naturally want to run away from. The bright colors invite you to stare at those fears. The manic energy of his work is how he processes these things that Human Nature tells us to recoil from, helps him understand why he chooses not to run from those we fear. It invites you, to hopefully take his hand, and understand with him.
